I can't decide if I like fernet or not. Take it or leave it. This wikipedia article really nails it, "its smell has been described like black licorice-flavored Listerine". It's such an agressive medicinal herbaceous kick in the throat yet at the same time it's thick syrupy sweetness is comforting. It's hard to say if I like it or not. One thing for sure is the ginger ale chaser does wonders. I quite like R Bar, it's a nice dive with a jukebox and grimy/grungy seats.... P.S. Did you know that San Francisco accounts for 25% of US consumption of Fernet? That's wild!!
